Only getting younger!
We have a new member: Foundation for Housing the Youth (FHY) – Fiatalok Közösségi Lakhatásáért Alapítvány, from Budapest!
The Foundation has been created by the legendary College for Advanced Studies in Social Theory (TEK), a unique student organisation that gave rise to numerous civil society organisations and social movements in Hungary. And so, we expect things to shake up in MOBA as well.
TEK has existed since 1981 and its processes of collective learning have been rooted in collective-based housing practices. Focused on a critical approach to topics taught at the University, TEK uses and explores critical pedagogy, gender studies, postcolonial theory, political economy and critical urban studies.
TEK students have been living and organising in the dormitory of Budapest Corvinus University since the 90s. However, since its privatisation, the number of available beds has decreased, fees have tripled, and space for community events has been shrinking. Faced with rising unaffordability, inaccessibility and inability to carry out their activities, the students turned to cooperative housing approaches, marking a new era for TEK – and MOBA too.
MOBA now consists of eight members and three associate members. Our newest member, Foundation for Housing the Youth from Budapest, brings not just youthful enthusiasm and resilience but also guts and critical thinking. We are excited and curious to uncover how this expansion of our network and connection to the student cooperative housing movement will complement our endeavours.
